About

I’m a freelance reporter based in Baltimore who writes about the legal system. I began my journalism career at the Erie Times-News, my hometown newspaper, where I covered courts for four years. I spent most of my days in courtrooms, covering homicide trials, high-profile lawsuits and other legal issues.

In 2020, I moved to Baltimore and helped launch an Annapolis bureau for Gannett/the USA Today Network. I covered the Maryland legislature for Gannett’s two Maryland newspapers, the Hagerstown Herald-Mail and the Salisbury Daily Times. Then I moved to the Maryland Daily Record, a legal newspaper, where I covered trial courts.

At The Daily Record, my reporting revealed crime lab backlogs, an unusually favorable plea deal for a sheriff’s deputy, and a lucrative contract between the city of Baltimore and a Chicago law firm known for using aggressive, questionable tactics to defend against wrongful conviction lawsuits.

Before I began freelancing, I worked briefly at The Baltimore Sun, where I used court records to uncover the cause of a 2020 natural gas explosion at a downtown office building, a man’s death-by-neglect at a county detention center, and explosive allegations against drug companies accused of contributing to Baltimore’s opioid crisis.

Today, I freelance full time for news outlets like The Baltimore Beat, The Baltimore Banner, and The Daily Record. I’ve written about the $266 million jury verdict in Baltimore’s opioid case, the backfiring of Maryland’s bail reform effort, and pigeons. My work has won numerous awards, including for investigative journalism, public service journalism and breaking news.
